Intersectionality is a framework for understanding the advanced method that the various facets of individuals’s identities overlap, together with their race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and extra. The time period was coined in 1989 by Black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, LLM, J.D. Intersectionality holds that an individual’s numerous identities don’t dwell in separate vacuums; fairly, individuals exist on the intersections of their identities.

“Intersectionality is one of the many tools that Black feminist thought has generated,” says Jennifer Nash, J.D., Ph.D., a professor of African American Studies and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University. “It has been developed over the courses of decades of Black feminist intellectual labor from scholars and activists including Kimberlé Crenshaw, Patricia Hill Collins, Deborah King, Frances Beal, and the Combahee River Collective.”

Intersectionality is commonly utilized in relationship to feminism. Intersectional feminism acknowledges that whereas all ladies face oppression, all ladies are usually not equally oppressed, and never all ladies face the identical challenges. Some ladies face extra critical hurt and injustices due to how their different identities intersect with their womanhood. For instance, Black ladies face challenges which are a results of each their gender and their race. These challenges are usually not simply additive (gender discrimination plus race discrimination); they really compound one another (gender discrimination made worse by race discrimination, and race discrimination made worse by gender discrimination) and produce distinctive types of inequality that solely individuals at this intersection expertise.

“Intersectionality has transformed conversations,” Nash says, in order that it’s now broadly understood that to dismantle oppressive buildings, we should take into consideration how they’re interlocking and reinforcing. We can’t take into consideration misogyny, for instance, with out interested by race, class, and sexual orientation.

Intersectionality may also be utilized to any social motion from Black justice (which should acknowledge the distinctive challenges of Black trans ladies, for instance) to local weather change (ecofeminism acknowledges how Black, Indigenous, and different individuals of coloration disproportionately endure from environmental destruction) to homosexual rights (which should acknowledge that trans individuals face extra violence and hurt than cis homosexual individuals).
